27. The Spiritual Shapes the Material, Part 1

These essays are written in sequence and build on each other. Read the preceding essay here.

God is a Spirit

— KJV, John 4:24

Man is a spirit, and the Nature of God is different from that of man. Therefore the reference to God as “Spirit” must have deeper meaning. For now we can use it in the context of the Holy Spirit. We shall return to the topic later.

It is self-evident that that which is first created, that which is closest to the Creator, would most closely correspond to this Nature of the Creator.  This indicates that Creation must first have manifested spiritually, not materially. Or stated simply, the “heavens” were created before this material universe.

Because of its greater similarity to the Nature of the Creator (to the limited extent that we can speak of “similarity” between that which is created and the Creator), the spiritual bears life and power within itself. This life and power contains further creative potential.

The material has no inherent life or power: it is merely “dust”. The actual power is in the non-material:

There is nothing from without a man,
that entering into him can defile him:
but the things which come out of him,
those are they that defile the man.

— Mark 7:14-16

The material things which enter a man’s mortal body have no direct impact on his immortal spirit, but the things that emanate from him, from his spirit, are living and they will have spiritual effects.

So, for example, when a man becomes addicted to alcohol the primary problem is not the physical alcohol but his will, his volition. He used his will to seek pleasure in alcohol in the first place. It is his will that set the process of addiction in motion and it is only his will that can reverse the process.

The material is a manifestation of the non-material. The seed of every visible invention is an invisible idea. An audible word is powered by an invisible thought. And so on.

We can now put these observations together and infer that Creation first manifested spiritually, and then the spiritual creation gave rise to the material.

In other words, there is a transition from the Creator, to the spiritual world (the “heavens”), and then to the material world i.e. there are two “steps” of creating.

Those who have carefully read the accounts of creation in the Book of Genesis would have observed that there are two accounts of creation described therein…but that is a topic for another day.

When we say “spiritual” and “material” we are simplifying an unimaginably vast seen (visible) and unseen (invisible) Creation with many parts and gradations:

In my Father’s house are many mansions

— John 14:2

Since Creation developed according to the Laws of Creation from its very beginning, the Laws of Creation must be of a nature closely similar to that of the Creator. They are living laws which express God’s Power, as discussed in detail in an earlier essay.

Since the material world bears the “DNA” of the spiritual world, the physical laws that scientists discover (e.g. gravity, thermodynamics, time-minimization, etc) must be material manifestations of the Divine Laws.

So far, our interpretations of these discoveries have been materialistic. When we become spiritually mature our application of them will align with the wisdom and love that is contained in the Laws of Creation.  Scientists and entrepreneurs alike will work as servants of God.

We sow non-material spiritual seed through our will, thoughts, and words. The Power of God contained in the Laws of Creation then automatically nurtures and develops these invisible “creations” until they mature and manifest materially. This happens without man’s conscious (i.e. physical, mental) knowledge.

So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
And should sleep, and rise night and day,
and the seed should spring and grow up,
he knoweth not how.

— Mark 4: 26-27

We are “free” to sow any type of seed into Creation but not free to choose the resulting fruit.

We are “mini-creators”. We determine (will), think, and speak countless times every day, and thus build our spiritual empires.  Failure to align these activities with The Word will lead to our own downfall, here or hereafter, since we shall reap what we sowed.

Today’s Resolution

  • We shall strive to keep our thoughts loving and pure, so that our thoughts, words, and actions will align with The Word.
